Final Results from the 2017 Board of Directors Election

The election and appointment process for new members of the CARLI Board of Directors has been completed. Directors elected to 3-year terms beginning July 1, 2017 are: Jeffrey Douglas (Knox College), Tammy Kuhn-Schnell (Lincoln Land Community College), and Michael Lorenzen (Western Illinois University).
 
Directors appointed to one-year terms are: Taran Ley (Southern Illinois University School of Medicine), Cathy Mayer (Trinity Christian College) and Frances Whaley (Illinois Valley Community College).

The CARLI membership told the CARLI Preservation Committee as part of our 2015 Preservation Survey that disaster planning was a topic in which help was greatly needed. Thus, for our 2016-2017 annual project, the Preservation Committee chose to outline the steps to create a disaster plan. Our theme for our disaster planning project was “Slow and Steady Wins the Preservation Race.”

Although some academic and university libraries, primarily those in large, well-endowed institutions, collect statistics concerning disasters and preservation activities, there is no regular national collection of statistics about disasters in libraries. (Meyer (2009) and Peterson et al (2016)) This state of affairs is not new: academic libraries have never collected this information systematically in spite of years of keeping statistics on other preservation concerns.  For a brief period of two years, the American Library Association tried to collect disaster information related to preservation activities among libraries and other cultural heritage foundations, but that effort was quickly abandoned due to a low response to institutional surveys. Thus, with the exception of two years (2012 and 2013), our field has no data upon which to base preparation proposals for disaster related preservation issues.

Still, those very two years are tremendously instructive.

On April 10, 2017, an overcast, blustery day, twenty-six librarians from twenty-one member CARLI institutions met in Normal, Illinois, to learn at a hands-on workshop basic preservation methods for books and other paper materials. Led by Jennifer Hunt Johnson, Conservation and Preservation Specialist at Illinois State University, with a mighty assist from Bonnie Parr, Conservator at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the day began with definitions of basic terms – conservation, preservation and restoration. From there, we learned about the wet, the dry, and several methods in-between of caring for print materials.

Enoshima Island lies off the coast of Japan's largest island (Honshu), just south of Tokyo and Yokohama. The island is a popular tourist destination thanks to it's sandy beaches, but was once a sanctuary for Benzaiten, the Buddhist goddess of music. This photo of the island at the turn of the 19th century comes from Knox College's Grace Ward Photograph Collection.

It is overwhelming to consider the possibility of these catastrophic events, but as the caretakers of important collections, archivists and librarians must make a plan. Luckily, there are an abundance of models and example disaster plans that one can consult. What follows is a guideline of basics to consider when making a disaster plan as well as links to useful websites that will assist in creating your plan.

To make the UB Stat 3 and UB Stat 5 report a more valuable collection development tool, CARLI is adding a normalized title field (NORMAL_HEADING_2450) to the monthly results, beginning with the April 2017 data. The NORMAL_HEADING_2450  field makes it possible for library staff to compare requested titles with your library’s collection using newly developed shared SQL.

CARLI has written a new report, “UB Stat 6: All Requests.” This report lists all of the titles that your patrons requested to borrow through I-Share during a date range.
 
A new webpage,UB Stat 6: All Requests, Import Directions, contains a more complete explanation of this report, including step-by-step import directions for Microsoft Excel or Access, considerations for data analysis, and links to shared SQL for request/collection review.

Volunteer for a CARLI Committee: Deadline April 28

Each year CARLI has a number of opportunities to serve on various committees. Service on CARLI committees affords individuals a unique opportunity to use their experience and expertise to help shape the future of the consortium and its services. CARLI is now seeking volunteers to serve on nine advisory committees. Volunteers chosen will serve a three-year term, July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2020. Faculty and staff members from all CARLI member libraries, with all levels of experience, are encouraged to apply.
